It was a full week of school at GCS, and the range of autumn weather was on full display as well. Here are some of the many photos that faculty and staff wanted to share with the community:
Kindergarten students invited the principal into their classroom to share an illustration that they made after listening to a story about his recent trip overseas. The picture is now proudly on display in his office.
First graders attended a reading program at the Shaw Library and learned about the importance of access to books and public spaces.
Upper elementary students were able to begin work in the 100 Mile Reading and Running Club with support from Northern Light Health, and they prepared for snowpack measurements with guidance from the Appalachian Mountain Club.
And high school students attended a financial literacy session presented by Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union as part of their guidance lessons this year.
We are grateful to our community partners for their continued involvement in the school, and we hope that other community organizations will get involved as opportunities arise.
Monday, October 27th is a White Day.

Good afternoon soccer parents and fans. As of right now our middle school games are still on for tomorrow as scheduled. However there is a high likelihood that weather forces us to move to Thursday. I have been in contact with both schools and we will all talk tomorrow morning once we have a better idea of weather. Wanted to keep everyone updated as much as possible. I will update everyone tomorrow morning as soon as a final decision is made. Thank you!
I do anticipate the need for 8th grade to play up to varsity in basketball, especially for the girls, however if we can get enough participation I would love for the girls to concentrate on just MS.
For our varsity athletes don't forget we are in a new conference (East-West) and we now play in the small school (class S) division which will allow for a more balanced and competitive schedule. We have both varsity boys and girls coaches returning as well as our MS girls coach returning for a second season. Our programs are continuing to develop and we need all the participation possible! Lets make Laker basketball what it used to be not that long ago!
High school Environmental Science students traveled to the University of Maine's experimental forest on Wednesday as part of the Envirothon program. Students reported that they very much enjoyed getting to learn in the field and apply new skills. Thank you to Mr. Crabtree for arranging this experience.
Elementary students attended sessions by Chewonki outdoor education on Friday and learned about animal adaptations, aquatic ecology, and the traits and behaviors of owls. Thank you to the elementary teachers and community supporters who helped to produce this program.
As autumn comes into full swing and the weather changes, please be sure to send your students to school with seasonally appropriate clothing, including outerwear. We want students to be able to learn and recreate outdoors as much as possible, and we appreciate your support in preparing for the wind, the rain, and the cold.
Monday, October 20th, is a Blue Day.

Due to a backlog of noteworthy autumn events at Greenville Consolidated School, please see the following images recognizing faculty and staff who have gone above and beyond their normal duties in support of school programming.
1. Thank you to Mr. Beverly for organizing an Outing Club field trip to Grafton Notch. The weather was spectacular, and the students had a wonderful time exploring a different part of the state.
2. Congratulations to Ms. Tardif for being one of 100 science teachers nationwide to be selected for the Department of Defense STEM consortium's "Society for Science" conference in Washington, D.C. This was a tremendous honor in recognition of her commitment to science education in rural Maine.
3. Thank you to Mrs. Hamilton, Mrs. Falla, and Mrs. Garber for their work in organizing the first Maine Apple Crunch day, celebrating proper nutrition and local produce.
We are fortunate to have each one of them in our professional community.

Also a huge win for the varsity boys as they upset #2 ranked PTA in overtime. The Lakers got two goals from Elijah Denham, including a near half field chip shot over the goalie to win it with just over a minute left in overtime. Landon Theriault was outstanding in net as usual to secure the Lakers win.
And last but certainly not least our middle school girls came up with a very big 3-1 win in their last regular season game against Penobscot Christian. Harper Swanson, Astrid Seeback and Maggie Shaw each found the net for your Lakers. The Lakers got strong goaltending from Micha Brown and Indie Shaw to secure a big win before playoffs.
Speaking of playoffs! Both middle school teams will be in this years Penquis League tournament. Playoff seeding and schedules will be announced shortly.
Go Lakers!
The first grade class invited the Principal in to share a story during their community meeting. Students were able to see photos he had taken of Elephants, Leopard, Giraffes, and Baobab trees from a recent trip overseas.
10th graders hosted a guest lecture from Medieval historian John Contreni during the British Literature class.
The middle school golf team won its match on Wednesday with two players winning the male and female medals.
And all of the middle school and high school students were able to celebrate the GCS Homecoming Weekend. The weather was perfect, the bonfire was well-attended, and the blacklight dance was visually stunning.
